Updated 27 Feb 2026How we research

Cycling around Lake Garda is one of the great multi-day rides in northern Italy, combining dramatic lakeside scenery, mountain passes, and charming towns along a route of approximately 140 kilometres. The full circuit can be completed in two to five days depending on fitness level and how many stops you make. The western shore (Gardesana Occidentale) features tunnels carved into cliff faces and stunning views from elevated road sections, while the eastern shore (Gardesana Orientale) passes through olive groves and vineyards with the dramatic backdrop of Monte Baldo. The northern section around Riva del Garda and Torbole is the most mountainous, with climbs and descents that reward riders with spectacular panoramas. A dedicated cycle path covers significant portions of the route, particularly around the southern end of the lake and through the Sarca Valley in the north. E-bike rentals have made the circuit accessible to a much wider range of riders, and several companies offer supported tours with luggage transfer between hotels. Along the way, stops in towns such as Sirmione, Limone sul Garda, Malcesine, and Riva del Garda offer opportunities for sightseeing, swimming, and sampling local cuisine.

Good to know

How difficult is cycling around Lake Garda?

The difficulty varies significantly by section. The southern and eastern shores are relatively flat, while the northern section around Riva del Garda involves significant climbing. The western shore road (Gardesana Occidentale) has some narrow sections with tunnel passages shared with cars, which requires confidence. E-bikes are a popular option and make the full circuit accessible to recreational riders. Most supported tour companies rate the ride as moderate.

Can you rent bikes for the Lake Garda circuit?

Yes, numerous rental shops around the lake offer road bikes, touring bikes, and e-bikes. Prices typically range from 30 to 80 EUR per day depending on the type of bike. Several companies specialize in multi-day rentals with the option of one-way pickup and drop-off at different towns. It is advisable to book in advance during the peak summer season, especially for e-bikes.

What is the best direction to cycle around Lake Garda?

Most cyclists ride counter-clockwise (heading north along the western shore and south along the eastern shore). This direction keeps you on the lake side of the road for much of the route, providing better views and safer positioning on the narrower western sections. Counter-clockwise also means you tackle the steeper western shore climbs early in the day when energy levels are higher.

Are there dedicated cycle paths around Lake Garda?

Dedicated cycle paths cover a growing portion of the circuit, particularly around the southern end of the lake between Peschiera del Garda and Mantova, and through the Sarca Valley in the north near Riva del Garda. However, significant sections still require riding on the main lakeside road, which can be busy with traffic in summer. The ongoing Garda by Bike project aims to create a continuous cycle path around the entire lake.
